21st Century Venice Carnival Style

As it is each February, the world-famous Carnevale di Venezia, or Carnival of Venice, is now underway. Each year I look forward to seeing photos of people parading around San Marco Square in exquisite baroque costumes and reminisce about costume dancing around an opulent palazzo at a ball one year.

Consisting of 118 small islands separated by canals and linked by bridges, Venice is rich with opulent architecture, renaissance art and music – a unique city – the perfect city to host this theatre.

To pay homage to its sumptuousness I have envisioned a carnival where costumes are modernised, creating a 2020 alternative to the enchanting renaissance costume below.

At this imaginary 21st century carnival, you would wear an extraordinarily luxurious outfit that is part baroque (respecting the era the carnival was born), part retro. A dramatic and opulent one-shoulder top constructed from carefully arranged and stacked pleated silk fans runs down one side to the floor. Pair it with glamourous sparkle trousers and gold disco platforms. The long, floral, lace velvet gloves extend the baroque theme, with several gold cuffs up the right arm balancing the fantail. Statement serpent earrings are a sign of wicked fun to come. Finally, top it off with and a petite crown symbolising your rank – Belle of the Ball – of course.
