Romancing With Frida Kahlo

When it comes to the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo we may think – creative, strong, feminine, unapologetically unique, fiercely intelligent, independent, confident, complex, fragile, passionate, moody, romantic.

And when we think of her style we may think- layers, embroidery, romantic florals, shawls, lace, accessories, extravagant headpieces, explosions of colour, corsetry, full skirts, maxi’s.

Her style was a genuine reflection of who she was at the core- it displayed her uniqueness, femininity, strength and passion all in one, proudly rejecting trends & standing out from the crowd.

One of my favourite Frida quotes:

Nothing is absolute. Everything changes, everything moves, everything revolves, everything flies and goes away.”

In this post, I have curated an outfit for the modern day Frida that I feel is also a reflection of this quote.  This outfit has movement –  romantic undertones, vibrant colour, moodiness with black, femininity, flamboyance and above all uniqueness.

How to wear this outfit:

  • This maxi skirt with beautiful large florals moves gracefully as you walk.  The lace bustier is worn under the semi transparent fitted bodysuit with the large bow that billows out from one side of the neck.
  • This blouse can be styled several ways. If you don’t wish to tie a big bow,  just drape the long ties around your shoulders to give a shawl effect.
  • Next, delicately place the necklace around the neck sitting under the bow/or drape (not over it) so it lays flat on the chest and enough where you can see the beautiful stones and gold feature peaking out.
  • And finally, finish off with edgy mesh booties and a Mexican style pouch bag – very Frida!
