Inspirations

The cornerstone ideas which have shaped my vision and curated my direction.

I am inspired by beauty and the unusual. My inspirations may come in the form of – cultures that differ to mine, how languages can separate us and bring us together, renaissance art, architecture of all eras, travel that excites and challenges, autumn colours. And then there is the world of Baroque. I love the drama and grandeur of the Baroque period in particular, with its sense of motion and exuberance.

My original blog Obsessions by Gessica that I started in 2010 contains many of my inspirations posts. It is a fun and colourful concoction of all things I love, through my eyes.

Below are just some of these posts. For more click on the blog above.

Iconic Photographer Melvin Sokolsky

The 1963 Bubble series shot in Paris over ten days, and created for the Harper’s Bazaar Spring collection by New York photographer Melvin Sokolsky, is still to this day one of the more innovative photography experiments ever.

The Dapper Men Of The Congo

Les Sapeurs is their name and fashion is their game where colour has no shame. These are a group of Congolese men who love to dress like a million bucks — even though they live in poverty. Their tradition has been around for a long time and you may very well know of them.

Transforming Paper Into Fashion

There are always artists pushing the boundaries with creating out of everyday simple items…..such as paper. Working with such a delicate material and painstakingly molding it into a spectacular dress or any object for that matter, is just pure talent. Having the patience to intricately cut stunning designs from paper via hand or lazer and then glue, sew, knit or weave the pieces together bit by bit shows both discipline and passion.

The Art of Flamenco

When I saw my first flamenco dance in Seville, I was hooked. I went several more times whilst living in Barcelona. It is not that I wished to be a flamenco dancer, it was being immersed in the whole theatre of it all. The vibrant foot moves, the elegant hand movements and the expressions on their faces that had me enthralled….plus of course the flamboyant dresses.

Underwater Glamour

Underwater fashion photography has been popular for years now. This unique style ranges from magazine editorials that show models gracefully submerged under water fully clothed in haute couture, some even in home decor settings (like photo above), to underwater fairytale creative shoots for books and personal family albums

Carnival Fun In Venice

This ancient city on water displays its most elegant costumes and masks and its streets and canals are filled with a magical atmosphere that is unique in the world. ‘Carnevale’ is the very epitome of extravagance, as visitors flock from all over the globe to enjoy the most decadent fancy-dress party on earth.

The Unexpected Charm of Valparaiso, Chile

Just a two hour drive from Santiago, this gritty and semi chaotic Chilean seaside city had me hooked as soon as I entered it. What had me captivated with Valparaiso was the vibrant, eclectic life going on in the hilltop neighbourhood: in fact 42 steep hills known as Cerra’s.

Design Supremo Verner Panton

Interior and furniture designer Verner Panton (1926-1998) could be described as the god of colour. Hailing from Denmark, he was one of the most remarkable innovative designers of the 20th century. Re-known for his futuristic furniture made of plastics and vibrant colours: you may recognise his Panton and Cone chairs around the world.

The Visions Of Gregory Colbert

Gregory Colbert  is a Canadian photographer/film maker who created Ashes and Snow, an ongoing travelling exhibition of photographs and films focusing on the exquisite interaction of humans and animals. Better known as the nomadic museum, these images and films are displayed in purposely built temporary structures that travel the world.
